Last Night Sting Dropped From The Rafters And Reminded Us Why We All Watch Pro Wrestling

I love wrestling, but I may love nostalgia even more. If you need the cliffnotes version of what’s going on in AEW, Sting is currently on a retirement tour that is going to come to an end (maybe, because it’s pro wrestling) at AEW’s Revolution PPV, this Sunday March 3rd.

It is advertised as Sting’s last match.

I’ve been critical of AEW’s lack of storylines before, but Sting is one that they’ve kept super consistent since he entered AEW. He went from an appearance to a legitimate wrestler on the roster. Not a novelty act, not a charity spot, he’s just fucking STING.

So last night on AEW, Tony Khan booked the absolute perfect spot before Revolution. Sting propelled down from the rafters once more, in full throwback Sting gear.

For those of you too young who didn’t get to experience this, back when Sting was the ultimate anti-hero (WCW’s version of Stone Cold), he took on the nWo almost single handedly. He’d appear out of nowhere and then mysteriously appear in the rafters, completely silent. He didn’t wrestle for an entire year, yet was one of the most highly anticipated characters on the entire show. Everyone wanted to know, what was going on in the mind of Sting?

When he added the descent from the rafters his appearances took on new meaning. Like an actual crow, he’d come down to deliver beatings to his enemies. No thanks needed. Not much emotion. He’d simply appear, then leave, leaving the audience in a perpetual state of shock and awe.

Last night the goosebumps on my forearms were real. This is why we watch. We watch wrestling for moments that make us feel.

Tony Schiavone with the vintage “It’s Sting!!!!”. The look on the Young Bucks’ faces. It told it all. Cherish these moments. Never look at an “old timer” and wish they weren’t on your TV. Pro Wrestlers are the last real superheros if you think about it. In no other forum can a man in his 60s dress up like the crow, full face paint and it make total sense.

I’m very excited for AEW Revolution this Sunday. If AEW accomplished anything with Sting’s appearance last night, it’s made the show must see. You simply cannot miss Sting call it a career.

…. unless he decides to wrestle for 10 more years which he probably is.
